The BJP on Wednesday said Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s entry into Greater Noida villages past police arrangement to hold a dharna in support of agitating farmers was possible because of a “deal” between CM Mayawati and the Congress ahead of the assembly polls in the state next year.

Former BJP chief Rajnath Singh, who was arrested on Monday while trying to reach the violence-hit Bhatta-Parsaul villages, said: “It is disheartening to know when senior Congress leaders like Digvijaya Singh and Rahul Gandhi visited the village, the (Uttar Pradesh) government removed CrPC section 144 (that bans assembly of more than five people).”

Singh said, “The Congress and BSP are hand in glove on this issue. Their understanding was also seen in Parliament’s public accounts committee (when a BSP MP joined Congress to reject MM Joshi’s draft report on the 2G scam).”

Singh, who will sit on a 24-hour hunger strike in Ghaziabad on Thursday in support of the farmers’ agitation, said: “Uttar Pradesh is burning. Instead of putting out the flame, the Congress is fanning it… The UP government is creating fear… Mayawati has no right to continue. She should resign.”

He appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to stop “nautanki (theatrics)” over the cause of farmers and call back Gandhi and Singh.
