The BJP on Wednesday wrote to the Justice JS Verma Committee, suggesting that gang rape, custodial rape, rape committed after abduction, and the infliction of "life-altering injuries" on a victim - such as disfiguration, gouging out an eye or severing of a limb - be made punishable with death.

The letter - written by party president Nitin Gadkari to the panel looking into laws on rape - also recommends that changes be proposed in the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, to change the definition of juvenile to a person "who has not completed 16 years of age". The party has rejected the idea of chemical castration.
