BJP supports Amitabh, but Shatrughan doesn’t

Continuing its all-out support for Amitabh Bachchan in response to Congress attacks on him, the BJP said on Saturday that Congress’ shrillness reminded it of the days of the Emergency, when anyone the Nehru-Gandhi family despised was thrown in jail.

Continuing its all-out support for Amitabh Bachchan in response to Congress attacks on him, the BJP said on Saturday that Congress’ shrillness reminded it of the days of the Emergency, when anyone the Nehru-Gandhi family despised was thrown in jail.

But the BJP’s view is not echoed by all its members. Shatrughan Sinha does not seem to share the BJP’s sympathy for Bachchan.

“The real issue is not Amitabh becoming Gujarat’s brand ambassador,” said party spokesperson Prakash Javdekar. “Had it been so, why would his son Abhishek be targeted? This is the worst kind of personal vendetta politics. The first family of the Congress does not like Amitabh… It is this Congress mentality — that the one I dislike will be ostracised and even jailed — that had ushered in the Emergency. This is an attack on art and culture, and also on the very idea of the Indian union.”

However, Sinha — a Bachchan contemporary not on very good terms with him, and known for differing with his party’s line quite often — said: “It is not a national duty of Amitabh Bachchan to become brand ambassador of everything right from digestive pills to hair oil, or opening Bandra-Kurla sealink express.”
