The ‘Killer’ Blueline bus claimed a 21-year-old Delhi University (DU) student’s life on Thursday afternoon.
The victim was crushed to death by one of two speeding Blueline buses in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura area, police said.
“The incident took place when the deceased who has been identified as Aakash Gupta was heading to a petrol pump on his motorcycle on road number 67 en route to Bhajanpura,” said a senior Delhi Police officer investigating the incident.
According to police, Gupta, a first year SOL (School of Open Learning) student of Delhi University and resident of Babarpur’s Hariom Nagar, was about to turn into a petrol pump when a speeding Blueline bus rammed into his motorbike from behind.
“He was heading to Bhajanpura from Babarpur when he was caught between two Blueline buses that were racing on the road. One of them, a bus running on route number 335 that plies between Nand Nagri and Hauz Khas, rammed into his motorcycle, making him lose control of his two-wheeler and fall face-first onto the road,” the officer said.
Police said Gupta was rushed to the GTB hospital with severe head injuries, where he succumbed during the course of treatment.
“Immediately after the accident, the locals of the area rushed to the spot and intimated us about the incident. They also staged a protest against the Blueline bus operators and demonstrated with the victim’s family. The errant driver had succeeded in escaping from the spot,” said the officer.
Hours after the incident, the police were able to nab the errant driver and identified him as 32-year-old Vijender.
“The bus has been impounded and Vijender has been placed under arrest. A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered at the Bhajanpura Police Station,” the officer added.
