Talking to HT, DMRC managing director E Sreedharan, said: "The communication-based signaling system is designed in such a way that allows metros to run at a very high frequency of 90-100 seconds without any trouble. On new lines, we will run trains at the highest possible frequency."

Delhi Metro officials also said that the new signaling system would reduce occurrence of glitches related to the signaling system. These often disrupt service on existing corridors.

During the last year, a number of technical snags disrputed services, mostly on Line 2 (Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri) and Line 3 (Noida-Dwarka) where trains run at a frequency of 2 minutes 30 seconds and 2 minutes 40 seconds, during peak hours. The existing signaling system on lines laid under phases 1 and 2 allows trains to run at a frequency of minimum three minutes.

"We have no option but to run trains at a frequency of less than three minutes to cater to the growing number of commuters. This resulted in many snags on the lines," said an official.
