The semi-nude body of a young woman, who is suspected to have been raped and mercilessly assaulted before being strangled to death, was found dumped below a pillar of the Nehru Place Metro Station on Tuesday morning.
A passerby found the body around 7.30am. The victim, who is yet to be identified, is 25-30 years of age.
"The victim's body, which was naked beyond the torso, was found dumped adjacent a small field a few hundred metres from the Lotus Temple, near pillar number 127 — located between the Nehru Place and Kalkaji Metro stations," a senior police officer said.
While Meghna Yadav, additional DCP (southeast) remained unavailable for comment, sources said a case of murder had been registered after the victim's primary medical examination revealed that she he had been strangled to death.
"The woman was wearing a black top, and a pair of blue jeans was found lying near her body. No jewellery was found on her person and her slippers were also missing from the spot," said the officer.
Sources said the multiple wounds on the body may have been caused due to physical assault.
Blue marks on the neck suggested that the victim might have been strangled.
The body has been sent to the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
"We are investigating the matter from all plausible angles, including that of sexual assault, but will only be able to say something conclusive once her post-mortem examination has been conducted," the officer added.
