The body of a young woman in her mid-20s was found inside a house in Paharganj on Friday. The incident came to light when the owner of the house at the Ramchandra Gali informed police about a foul smell emanating from the room on the third floor, he had recently rented out to a couple.
The police team broke the lock of the room and found the woman dead on the floor. The woman had a deep cut on her back, suggesting she was attacked by a blunt object.
An investigating officer said that the woman had taken the room on rent three days ago. A man who was accompanying her had spoken to the landlord and introduced her as his wife. He had promised the landlord to submit his identity proof after Holi. Police said that it appears the woman was murdered two-three days ago, because the body was found in a decomposed state.
Other residents in the building said they did not see the couple after they checked into the room three days ago. The woman is yet to be identified. Police sources said they are looking at the CCTV footage of the nearby hotels and taking help from the owner to identify the man, who had accompanied the deceased woman.
Police sources said that when the body was recovered, the room was empty. Though the landlord had seen the couple with their baggage when they took the room on rent. But on Friday, there were no bags or any of the woman’s belongings in the room.
DCP (central) Parmaditya said that the police have registered a case of murder and are trying to identify the woman.
