Urban development minister AK Walia on Thursday said the government has finalised boundaries of 1,018 of 1,239 unauthorised colonies.

He said the urban development department was now working on clearing the remaining hurdles to ensure these colonies are regularised at the earliest. More than four million people live in unauthorised colonies across the Capital.

Delhi government had issued provisional regularisation certificates to over 1,239 unauthorised colonies ahead of the Assembly polls in 2008. While distributing the certificates, the government had promised to regularise the colonies if the Congress came to power again.

But not a single colony has been regularised so far.

The process slowed down in 2011 following allegations that some “non-existent” and “ineligible” colonies were given provisional certificates. After the Congress’s defeat in the municipal polls, CM Sheila Dikshit had asked all concerned departments to expedite the regularisation process.
