Humiliated after being rebuked by his teacher, a 23-year-old student of bio-technology at a management college in Ghaziabad, jumped from his first-floor classroom on Tuesday afternoon.
Karamveer Kumar survived, but suffered critical backbone injuries and had to be given 17 stitches in his lower abdominal area.
The victim’s father, Mohan Lal — a resident of Gajraula area of JP Nagar district — said that his son had been running a fever for the last 20 days, so was unable to attend his college classes.
“After he returned to college last week, his teacher repeatedly rebuked him and asked him to call his parents. He also threatened that he would not be allowed to sit for his final semester examinations. The teacher told him to get out of class and also used some caste-based remarks,” Lal said.
“We had assured the college management that we would given them a medical-certificate justifying my son’s absence and his bad health. But the teacher’s behaviour made my son take such an extreme step. I will lodge an FIR once my son shows signs of recovery,” the father added.
JK Shahi, superintendent of police, said that a police team had been dispatched to inquire about the incident and every possible action would be taken against the accused once the complaint was received.
