Army chief General VK Singh has come under attack from various political parties over issues ranging from informing the media about the alleged bribe offer to forwarding an MP’s complaint on defence-related corruption to the CBI.
Even the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has constantly been attacking the government over graft, is not ready to stand up for the General. Parties ranging from the RJD to the NDA-constituent JD(U) demanded General Singh’s sacking.
Voicing his disapproval of the army chief's actions, senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh asked why he did not ensure the arrest of the alleged bribe-giver. However, the party also sought an explanation from the government with regard to the country's defence preparedness.
“The leakage of the letter is also an important aspect that has to be inquired into and… dealt with firmly. But the more important issue is the allegations raised by the army chief,” BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said. “In a parliamentary democracy, the PM and the defence minister are responsible for lack of defence preparedness,” stated BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.
The Bahujan Samaj Party also adopted a similar stance.
