A 26-year-old BSES employee was stabbed to death and six of his friends, including his younger brother, grievously injured in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area on Wednesday night.
Police said the victim, identified as Gaurav, was stabbed by several assailants in retaliation to his repeated attempts to coax them into celebrating India’s victory over Pakistan.
“Gaurav was a driver with the BSES. The six injured include his brother Abhishek, 17, Kuldeep Tomar, 26, Akshay, 29, Neeraj, 19, Shivam, 16 and Sanjeev, 45. Things turned ugly after a fight broke out between them and another group while celebrating India’s victory in last night’s match,” said a senior police officer.
According to police, the incident took place when the residents of the said area came out on the streets following the victory.
“The residents were celebrating, dancing and bursting crackers. Gaurav and his friends were among the revellers and insisted that Rajesh and Mahadev, who were passing-by on a motor cycle at the time, join them,” the officer said.
However, police said, Rakesh and Mahadev refused and asked Gaurav’s group to mind their own business.
“Gaurav’s group took offence and started hurling abuses at Rajesh and Mahadev. The incensed duo pocketed the insult, but for a very little while. They rode back to their residence and brought their friends to the spot to avenge the insult,” said the officer.
Police said a scuffle broke out between the two groups the minute Rajesh and Mahadedv reached the spot with their friends and Gaurav was stabbed in the melee. Gaurav and his friends were rushed to GTB Hospital, where he succumbed to the stab injury late at night.
“We have registered a case and arrested Rajesh, Mahadev and one of their associates identified as Lalla, in connection with the incident,” the officer added.
