The Border Security Force will on Friday ask its Bangladeshi counterparts to step up security on its side to restrict movement of criminals and cattle smugglers who have been targeting BSF personnel.

The BSF has come under increasing attack from cross-border smugglers after it made non-lethal weapons its first response.

“We want them to take steps to minimise illegal crossings since the smugglers have become more aggressive after our deployment of non-lethal weapons,” a BSF official said ahead of the bi-annual meeting of chiefs of the two border-guarding forces beginning Friday.

Sources said injuries to BSF personnel on border guarding duties along with the 4036-km border with Bangladesh shot up from 55 in 2010 to 140 in 2011 after it introduced non-lethal weapons.
