In a first-of-its-kind arrest under the Delhi Defacement Act, a member of legislative assembly (MLA) was arrested by the police on the orders of the court for allegedly defacing public property in a case in 2008.

Chaudhary Surender, an MLA belonging to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) from Gokulpur, was arrested in the court on Friday.

Deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Sanjay Jain said, "The NBW was issued after he failed to come for the hearings. He was arrested in the court premises."

Incidentally, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit also had a meeting with the civic agencies in which she instructed them to strictly enforce the Delhi Defacement Act to discourage sticking of posters, banners and other such material.
