A 40-year-old woman was nabbed by the Ghaziabad police on Saturday after she was caught on CCTV-footage stealing gold jewellery and diamonds from reputed showrooms in the city, police said.

Shahnaaz Bano and her brother-in-law Sajid Ahmed (25) went on a thieving spree at reputed showrooms in Western-UP and Ghaziabad regions and had amassed properties worth crores of rupees in Bijnore and Saharanpur districts, police said. While Shahnaaz was arrested, her Sajid is on the run.

The duo use to dress up in expensive and modern clothes and pose as customers when they went to the showrooms. They usually went during lunch hours when the owners were out. They would ask the salesman to display the gold and diamond items, usually small in size.

“They used to spend time under the pretext of selecting items and when the salesman would get preoccupied, the man would pass on the items from beneath the sales-counter to the woman, who used to hide them inside her clothes. Then they would walk off saying that the items were not up to their expectations,” senior superintendent of police Raghubir Lal said.

As per police, there have been two confirmed instances at showrooms with CCTV cameras.

“We have located their properties in Bijnore and Saharanpur worth crores and have also come to know dozens of instances of stealing during investigations,” SSP said.

Owner of Sharda Jewellers at MMX Mall in Sahibabad, Nakul Verma, said, “We had no inkling that they were thieves. The man spoke mostly in English and said that he wanted to purchase for a wedding. We came to know of the missing items took a stock-check at the end of the day.”

The duo struck again a week later at a branded-jewellery showroom at Ambedkar Road on February 14 and repeated their act, police said.

Police said the woman and her accomplice were inspired by the movie Bunty aur Babli and wanted to become rich in quick time, police said. Bano originally belongs to Bijnore district of UP, police revealed.
