South district police arrested three associates of Om Prakash alias Bunty on Friday. The gang had unleashed terror in south Delhi last month. They allegedly shot at people and snatched their motorcycles.
The gang has been involved in 18 cases of robbery and murder since June, the police said. Nasir alias Zakir, member of the gang, has been arrested. Two others, Mushtaq and Rakesh, who allegedly provided them logistical support, have also been held. Main accused, Bunty, and three others — Israel, Om Shiva and Rajesh — are still at large.
The Hindustan Times was the first to report the involvement of the gang in the serial shootings in the city in July and about Nasir’s arrest.
Plans made in Tihar
Bunty, who had 23 cases of heinous crimes registered against him, was released from Tihar Jail on bail in December 2007. “He met his associates — Nasir, Israel, Om Shiva and Rajesh Sharma — in jail. There they had hatched the plan to commit robberies in Delhi. They arranged sophisticated weapons from Uttar Pradesh,” said H.G.S. Dhaliwal, DCP (south).
Rented house in Gr Noida
It was Rajesh who helped Bunty find a hideout in Garhi Shehedra, Greater Noida. They moved into the house on June 28 and lived there till July 17 —the day the Delhi police commissioner declared a reward of Rs 50,000 each on them. The gang members had told their neighbours that they were loan recovery agents.
Eye on original papers
“It is easier to sell motorcycles with original papers in the second-hand market. Then, even if the vehicle is traced later, the unsuspecting purchaser is caught,” said a police officer.
Ashneet and Hardeep were shot in Amar Colony on July 11 when they refused to part with the original registration papers of their motorcycle.
They were involved in four cases of robberies in Noida and Greater Noida.
High alert no deterrent
On July 16, despite the heavy barricading in the city to catch them, the gang managed to rob a motorcycle at gunpoint in Mayur Vihar Phase-II. The same day, they also struck at a shop in Preet Vihar.
