Om Prakash alias Bunty (29) continues to elude the police. Bunty, who was once a “police informer”, is familiar with the way the men in khaki function.
“He has worked with the policemen and knows their functioning. He was used several times to gain information about other criminals active in south Delhi,” said a source.
On Thursday, Police Commissioner YS Dadwal admitted: “Sometimes, we do depend on criminals for information on other criminals.”
The Hindustan Times was the first to report the involvement of Bunty in the spate of killings in south Delhi.
Police officers investigating the case said he and his gang members have stopped using their mobile phones. The police were depending on technical surveillance to catch them. Meanwhile, the south district police detained another “close associate” of Bunty on Thursday evening.
The police commissioner on Thursday suggested that Bunty’s gang could be involved in the twin robberies that were reported from Mayur Vihar and Preet Vihar areas a day ago. The gangsters are accused of serial shootings where three people have been killed in south Delhi in the past one-week.
“On the basis of technical surveillance, we had come to the conclusion that they were not in Delhi. We have sent several teams to Faridabad, Ghaziabad and western Uttar Pradesh to nab them,” said the officer.
“On Thursday evening, we detained another associate of Bunty who was arrested with him in September last year. We are depending on him to gain certain vital clues. Now, we have five of his close associates in our custody,” said the officer.
The police are worried about the sophisticated weapons that the accused are carrying on them. “We have information that they procured the weapons somewhere from western Uttar Pradesh,” said the officer.
Crime Branch and Special Cell wings of Delhi Police are also investigating into the case.
