The ‘burgle-and-burn’ gang struck again on Wednesday, this time in Mayur Vihar area of east Delhi.
Like in previous cases, the gang targeted the house of a government officer. The gang previously terrorised residents of government quarters in Sarojini Nagar, Pillanji and RK Puram area.
“At around 3am we noticed smoke coming from the ground floor house. We rushed there and as we had the key to the main door, we managed to enter. The police and the fire brigade were called immediately," said Uma Shankar Dwivedi, who lives at the second floor of same flat. The owner of the house, KG Mohanan and his family left for Kerala on April 14. The incident occurred at Mayur Vihar Phase-1, pocket-2.
"Mohanan had given us the key to the main gate, but the thieves must have jumped the wall. The fire brigade managed to douse the blaze and when we entered we found the house was ransacked. Mohanan has been informed, and only he can tell the value of stolen items," Dwivedi added.
Mohanan is a personal secretary of a senior congress leader and lives with his wife and a daughter at the house.
"The gang members must have slipped past the security guards nearby. The security arrangements are not proper in the area," said Ramesh, Mohanan's friend.
A case has been registered at the Mayur Vihar Phase-1 police station.
"We have called forensic experts to take samples. Investigations are on," said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
