As Delhiites celebrated Diwali bursting crackers, fire fighters were on their toes on Friday night attending to more than 200 calls about fire-related incidents from across the capital.
According to fire officials, the department got calls from almost all parts of the city but no major fire was reported. "We received 169 calls from 12 pm till Friday midnight. After that we attended to more than 42 calls till 8:00 am on Saturday," said a fire department official, on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak to media.
According to fire department figures from last year, the fire fighters received 267 calls related to fire on Diwali day. In 2008, the figure was 270 and it stood at 150 in 2007.
Nearly 99% fire department officials were on duty on Diwali while the residents enjoyed the festivities with their families. "We deployed almost all our men during Diwali as we cannot take any chances," added the officer.
