Delhiites, it seems, are high on drugs.
Statistics have revealed that the seizure of narcotics such as heroin, ganja and cocaine in 2011 has been three times higher than in 2010.
In 2010, the Delhi Police had seized 15.26kg heroin while this year 48.62kg heroin has been seized so far.
Sources, however, said that a large amount of drugs were still available in the market for consumption as the police were only able to catch 50% of what was brought into Delhi.
"The number of drug users in Delhi is nearly 50,000 and that is why the consumption keeps on increasing," a senior crime branch officer said, adding that heroin always came by road from across the border.
Foreigners still act as carrier and bring heroin and cocaine from other countries.
"Now it is very difficult to bring drugs directly to India, so agents are using Nepal as transit point, from where drugs reach Delhi via courier. This is another cause of concern,"the officer added.
The Delhi Police have now started tracing those who supply drugs in Delhi.
"Whenever we catch a drug addict, we make sure to ask him the source of the drug. In this manner, we hope to curb smuggling," said BK Gupta, Delhi police commissioner.
Besides the district police, specialised units such as the crime branch and special cell are keeping a watch on smuggling of drugs in the national capital.
In 2010, the Delhi Police had registered 149 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and arrested 230 persons. This year a total of 701 cases have been registered in which 825 persons have been arrested so far, which is a 300% increase.
Apart from heroin, the Delhi Police have seized 2466.5kg ganja this year against the 1877.29kg seized last year.
"Even the seizure of cocaine has increased. We seized 472gm cocaine against 98gm last year," the officer added.
Cocaine always comes from South Africa and carriers are using various methods for smuggling.
Mostly, they send it through cargo. Recently, we arrested two men, who used to send cocaine concealed in the seat cover of a bicycle.
