In an incident of road rage, three unidentified men shot at a property dealer after his vehicle scraped past one of them at central Delhi’s West Patel Nagar around 9.30pm on Thursday, police said.
Police said the three men argued with him and shot at him in the abdomen.
The man is undergoing treatment at BL Kapoor Hospital and is condition is stated to be critical. The entire incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at a shop close to the crime spot.
The victim, Vipin Rajput, lives with his family in Block-37 of West Patel Nagar. His office is in Block-24 of West Patel Nagar, barely 2km away from his home, a senior police officer said.
On Thursday night, a senior officer said, Rajput closed his office and sat in his Maruti Swift car, waiting for a friend. A few minutes later, he moved his car a little ahead and brushed past an unidentified man’s hand in the process, who was standing there along with his two friends.
“The three men got agitated and began hurling abuses at Rajput, making him stop the vehicle. The men then started arguing and verbally abusing each other. The three men then went ahead and stopped at a roadside eatery while Rajput stood near his vehicle to wait for his friend,” said the police officer.
A few minutes later, Rajput’s friend came and the two of them stopped at the same eatery where the group of three accused were present.
“Assuming that Rajput had called his friend to pick up a fight with them, one of the assailants took out a pistol and fired a bullet at him, which hit him in the abdomen,” the officer added.
The three men then fled the spot even as Rajput’s friend began screaming for help. He took him home from where his family members rushed him to BL Kapoor Hospital. His wife called the police control room from the hospital.
Rajput underwent a five-hour surgery and part of the intestines damaged by the bullet was removed. “The operation began late on Thursday and went on till 4.30 am on Friday,” she said. She denied the attack was linked to any property dispute.
A case of attempt to murder and Arms Act has been registered at the Patel Nagar police station. Investigators are examining the CCTV footage to identify the attackers.
