If you own a car, it’s time you insured it. And if the insurance policy on your four-wheeler has expired, renew it. Now.
Because even if your driver caused an accident with your unisured vehicle, you could be prosecuted, under Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and end up in jail for three months. You may also be fined Rs 1,000.
This provision was always present in the law. But Delhi Police hardly enforced it.
The HC on Thursday took serious exception to it and sought an explanation from Delhi Police.
“It is noted in cases of accident caused by uninsured vehicle, police is not prosecuting owners and drivers of offending vehicles under Section 196 of the MV Act,” said Justice J.R. Midha.
