Buying cars may become more expensive in the city with the north corporation proposing to increase the one-time night parking charges.
Under the proposal, a small car costing between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 4 lakh may attract a charge of Rs. 5,000 instead of the existing Rs. 2,000.
At the time of registering new vehicles, every car owner has to deposit 'night parking charges' for using the roads of the colonies to park the cars at night.
At the budgetary meeting of the north corporation standing committee, Ram Kishan Singhal said for the civic body to improve its finances, it was imperative to increase charges such as night parking and teh bazaari rates.
If the proposal is accepted, people buying cars priced between Rs. 4 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh will have to shell out about Rs. 10,000 as night parking charge against the current Rs. 4,000. For luxury cars costing more than Rs. 10 lakh, buyers will have to pay around Rs. 15000 against the existing Rs. 4000.
The standing committee will take a final decision on January 7. “We do not want to impose any new taxes on the already burdened common man. However, we need to increase some of the charges that are very minimal at present. If night parking charges are increased, it will lead to a revenue of a few hundred crores for the corporation,” said Singhal.
Singhal said at present teh bazaar owners pay only Rs. 10 to set up stalls at the weekly markets and so the charge needs to be raised to Rs. 20. “These are very simple measures which will go a long way to improve our finances,” he added.
