The CBI began probing the alleged irregularities on the basis of several complaints it had received, some of which were forwarded to it by the Central Vigilance Commission.
The hired officials under CBI scanner were usually highly-paid and arbitrarily inducted by OC without the requisite approval of the concerned FA heads, according to a CBI source.
HT had reported on February 13 that said the CBI had put under its scanner appointments, including that of around 35 consultants/advisors for different FAs — including Shashi Tharoor for ‘community engagement’ — in the run- up to the sporting event.
The probe agency had examined the tenure terms, fee, and performance indicators of these consultants. When Tharoor allegedly received his consultancy fee from OC, he was not a Central minister.
CBI site goofs up on Rajiv killer
In a goof-up, a CBI write-up on its official website claimed that LTTE’s suicide bomber Thenmozhi Rajratnam alias Dhanu, who assassinated former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, had been put on trial by the agency and awarded death by the Supreme Court.
In reality, Rajratnam had died instantly on the spot after she detonated an RDX explosive-laden belt tucked below her dress. The agency on Tuesday removed the inaccurate portion. “It was a lapse,” said an official.
