“Prajapati was killed since he was a key witness to the killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi,” said a CBI source. The source also said Shah is suspected to have asked the then additional DG of the state’s Crime Investigation Department to provide him with the list of witnesses to the November 2005 Sohrabuddin-Kausar encounters, whose statements were to be recorded. Prajapati’s name was in the list,” said a CBI source.

Shah is also suspected to have provided the list to two ex-police officers, who were accused in the Sohrabuddin case. They only orchestrated Prajapati’s encounter, said the source.

Shah was grilled for over seven hours over allegations that he had assisted seven police officers, including the then SP of Banaskantha Vipul Aggarwal.

Shah was also quizzed to verify if he had any role to play in the transfer of the then DIG Vanzara from the ATS to the Border Range that comprises Banaskantha where the Prajapati was killed.
