The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday said it may question former Union Home Minister Buta Singh in a case of bribery, in which his son Sarabjot is already in the agency’s custody since Thursday night.
CBI director Ashwani Kumar said the agency was sure about the case against Sarabjot, though the probe was in the preliminary stage.
“We have not yet taken a decision whether to interrogate him (Buta Singh) or not. It will be taken on the merits of the ongoing probe and the evidence on record, including those of independent witnesses and telephonic records,” Kumar told HT.
Singh, who heads the Natio-nal Commission for Scheduled Castes, remained defiant, even as the BJP demanded his ouster.
“I am the chairperson of a constitutional forum. And I am capable, so why should I resign?” Singh shot back when asked about his resignation.
In more trouble for Sarabjot, the Delhi Police registered a case against him for possession of three illegal foreign-made revolvers.
The three revolvers, along with 38 cartridges, were recovered during a CBI search on Thursday at Sarabjot’s first floor flat, located at Jungpura Extension.
“Since firearms were not connected to the anti-corruption case that we were pursuing against Sarabjot, we handed them over to the Nizam-uddin police for verification —if the accused had licenses as claimed by him,” a senior CBI investigator who is not authorised to talk to the media said.
Sarabjot was arrested on Thursday for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1 crore from a Nashik-based civil contractor.
