The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday confirmed that it began investigations into 16 complaints regarding procedural irregularities and corruption charges against the Commonwealth Games’s Organising Committee (OC).

The agency’s probe currently is “preliminary in nature” and includes gathering of documents related to award of contracts and expenditures and vetting, verifying the details, according to an agency source who is not authorised to speak on the matter.

The agency is conducting its probe in close cooperation with the Enforcement Directorate, Central Vigilance Commission, the Comptroller and Auditor general (CAG), and Income Tax Department.

Source added: “Apart from these 15 cases, the CBI is also probing the expenditures related to the Queen’s Baton Relay in London in October 2009.”

The basis of the CBI’s probe is a mix of information from sources, citizens, the references from the CVC and the CAG. The agency would take “some more time before it files any preliminary inquiry report,” he said.
