The CBI will seek data from a few e-mail service providers having servers located in the United States (US) to gather details for its probe against suspected arms dealer Abhishek Verma.
“We will seek data on email accounts that were used by accused Abhishek Verma from certain email service providers whose servers are located in the US. The data will assist our probes against him,” said a CBI source.
The CBI has since June lodged four cases against Verma, including those related to alleged receipt of US $ 5.3 lakh from a Swiss arms manufacturing firm for influencing public servants to get it off the government blacklist, alleged fabrication of a letter in the name of a CBI official and alleged violation of the Official Secrets Act.
Verma’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal has rejected the CBI’s allegations against his client.
The CBI had lodged the cases after probing complaints it had received from C Edmonds Allen, a US-based former business associate of Verma. Allen had cited email correspondences he allegedly had with Verma as evidence to support his allegations.
The CBI has put under its scanner a few email accounts allegedly used by Verma to correspond with several individuals, including Allen. “The US-based servers would retain all data generated on the accused’s email accounts,” said the source.
