Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan on Sunday said the audio CD containing a purported conversation between his father Shanti Bhushan and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his former party colleague Amar Singh was “fabricated, doctored and spliced”.

The CD distributed to media four days ago insinuated that Shanti Bhushan, co-chairman of the joint drafting committee for the lokpal bill, had offered to fix a judge in a case in Andhra Pradesh for a payment of Rs4 crore through his son (Prashant).

Prashant said the CD was a conspiracy, which appeared to have the blessings of many powerful people to “derail judicial proceedings in two important cases” in the Supreme Court.

“In the CD Amar Singh has named a Supreme Court judge who happens to be the presiding judge of the bench which has to deliver judgments in two important cases, and this amounts to contempt of court,” he said.

Prashant said he was referring to the 2G spectrum case and to the petition seeking lifting of the ban on the CDs of Amar Singh’s controversial conversations in 2006 being made public.

"The anonymous CD circulated to the media last week is fabricated as we have got it subjected to forensic examination from two of the topmost forensic labs specialising in audio analysis," Prashant said.

Prashant said a leading expert on audio analysis in the United States, George Papcun of the University of California and Hyderabad-based independent forensic laboratory, Truthlabs, had given their findings on the CD.

“The CD has been edited at six places where the voice of Mr Shanti Bhushan appears. Both the labs have confirmed multiple gaps and signs of editing in this CD, which has been clearly doctored,” he said. “This confirms voices have been lifted and the CD has been prepared by splicing different conversations. The purported conversation between Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh has been lifted from the 2006 CD of the latter which is with the SC now," Prashant said. Asked to elaborate on his statement that it was a conspiracy, he said, "It is not only an attempt to discredit the civil society members of the joint drafting committee for the Lokpal Bill, but also a conspiracy to destroy the reputations of me and my father."
