The stalemate over who will handle the security of Airport Express Metro Line is finally over.
The security of the 23-km highly sensitive network will be looked after by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is already handling the security of the existing 160-km of Metro network in Delhi.
It was decided in a high-level meeting chaired by home secretary GK Pillai on Friday. After a marathon meeting, the government has decided that CISF will be securing the corridor and DAMEPL’s security men can help them in non-sensitive areas inside the stations. Around 70 veteran security men, who joined the Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd (DAMEPL) recently, would only be assisting passengers inside the Metro stations at the express line.
The meeting was attended by CISF officials, officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and DAMEPL.
The concessionaire company of the showcase airport express line has finally lost a battle that it had been fighting since last three weeks on the security arrangements. It wanted to keep the entire security with it and did not want CISF’s involvement. But the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) RK Kardam in his safety certificate had put a condition that security arrangements would be decided by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) only. The stalemate on the issue continued for three weeks.
DMRC chief E Sreedharan told HT, “Security will be completely looked after by the CISF and there will not be any role of private security guards in it.”
DAMEPL spokesperson said: “According to MHA, the core security for Airport Expressline will be taken care of by CISF.”
However, MHA sources said DAMEPL security guards could be used inside the stations to do soft jobs like helping or assisting passengers. CISF will soon deploy over 250 guards in the network and also would form Quick Reaction Teams at all six stations — New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan, NH8, IGI Airport and Dwarka sector 21—of which Dhaula Kuan and NH-8 stations are not going to be operational soon, they said.
