Profession: A full-time politician, Singh is the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. His name finds mention in the Limca Book of World Records for winning 10 consecutive elections from the same constituency and the same party.

Education: He graduated in Science from Delhi College (now known as Zakir Hussain college) in 1952.

Political career: Singh’s family has always been associated with politics. His father Chaudhary Himmat Singh was a Congress party worker and a freedom fighter. “I entered politics at the insistence of the then Outer Delhi Member of Parliament and senior Congress leader CK Nair, who was my father’s friend. He was the one who groomed me for politics,” said Singh. He has been in politics for 50 years now.

Family: Wife Shiv Kauri is a homemaker. They live in Lado Sarai. The couple have two sons and six daughters. The children are all married. Singh’s eldest son is a municipal councillor while the younger one runs his own business. A deeply religious man, Singh is proud of the fact that there are no liquor shops in his constituency. He gets up at 4 am for puja even at this age. “No one drinks or smokes in my family. We are vegetarians and we don’t even eat onion or garlic,” he said. Even now he visits Mathura and Vrindavan every month without fail, Singh added.

Cars: Though the Singhs have a fleet of cars like a Tata Innova and a Honda CRV, it is the 1970 model Fiat — the first car that Singh bought – that is still his favourite. The old white car is still parked in the garage of Singh’s official bungalow. “The car has a special meaning for me. It is sort of lucky for me. I drove our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and renowned social worker, freedom fighter and former deputy PM, Babu Jagjivan Ram in this car,” said Singh.
