Chandni Chowk revamp plan changed again
The Public Works Department plans to ban parking on either side of the main road in Chandni Chowk to decongest and redevelop the area.
The Public Works Department plans to ban parking on either side of the main road in Chandni Chowk to decongest and redevelop the area.
Instead of these cars, the department wants to build a 2.5-metre-wide walkway on both sides which will be an extension of the footpath.
The department has also suggested that the plan of battery-operated trams running in the area be scrapped. Instead, it has suggested that normal traffic be allowed on both sides, against the previous plan of reserving one side of the central verge for traffic and the other for pedestrians.’
The PWD will ensure that another road in the area, which connects Daryaganj and Kauria Pul, retains the ‘heritage look’.
PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said, “We will start the project in six months. We have made some changes to the plan which could not be implemented for years.” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had on Wednesday reviewed the project with the minister and asked him to expedite the work.
The PWD has also decided to change the design of lights and pavements in keeping with the style of the Mughal era. The Chandni Chowk redevelopment work was recently handed over to the PWD from the municipal corporation.
The new Chandni Chowk will not have any overhead electric wires or telephone lines. BSES and MTNL have already submitted their work estimates. The PWD is confident of finishing all the tender works in six months.
