A senior citizen was allegedly strangled to death and his wife’s face smashed during a suspected robbery in East Delhi’s Srestha Vihar area on Sunday morning, police said.
The couple — chartered accountant YP Soli (61) and homemaker wife Sudha (55) — lived alone and had hired a domestic help a few days ago.
Police said the help Sujit Kumar (21) is the prime suspect. Kumar had earlier worked with the family three years ago was filling in for their maid as she was on leave.
Sudha is recuperating at Max Hospital in IP Extension.
Police said the accused served drug-laced dinner to the couple and carried out the murder with the help of an accomplice. After the crime, he fled in a Fiat Palio parked outside.
Soli, who ran an accountancy firm from his residence, was found dead in his office. Sudha’s face bore several injury marks, police said.
“The couple had asked the servant to get himself verified with the police on Saturday itself,” said Dharmendra Kumar, joint commissioner of police (New Delhi range).
Soli’s elder daughter who lives in Mumbai tried to call her parents on Sunday morning. On not getting a response, she asked one of her neighbours to check.
“It was then that the murder was discovered, ” Kumar said.
