The Rohini Court Complex on Tuesday turned into a battleground after supporters of former Haryana chief minister Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Om Prakash Chautala clashed with the police.
A Delhi court had pronounceed its order on a sentence against Chautala, his MLA son Ajay Chautala and 53 others, The police resorted to lathi-charge to control the protestors and used tear gas as thousands of people pelted stones and crude petrol bombs. The commotion began the moment the sentence was pronounced.
As several journalists waited for the order on the sentence, the court complex in north-west Delhi witnessed chaotic scenes with INLD supporters shouting, protesting and pelting stones, forcing the police to lathi-charge them. The police barricaded one of the roads leading upto the court complex. Right after the order, the supporters threw stones and petrol bombs and the police resorted to using tear gas to contain the crowd, eyewitnesses said.
The court on Tuesday handed down a 10-year jail term to Chautala, his MLA son Ajay Chautala, two IAS officers and six others for illegally recruiting over 3000 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers in the state in 2000. 45 other convicts were handed down varying sentences by the court. O P Chautala was not present in the court since he had been hospitalized after being taken into custody last week. His son and all the other convicts were present in court.
All the convicts were sentenced under sections 120B(criminal conspiracy) , 418 (cheating), 467 (forgery), of the IPC and sections 13 (1) (d) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
