The prevalence of fake currency racket in areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal bordering Nepal was affecting the livelihood of the rural poor, a JD(U) member said in Lok Sabha on Friday.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mahabali Singh said it has come to light in several areas that poor peasants or daily wage earners were being paid in fake currency.

"When they go to deposit the money in the banks, it is found that the currency is fake. As a result, these poor people face arrest and harassment while those actually involved in circulating fake currency go scot free," he said.

Drawing the attention of the government on the matter, he said urgent steps should be taken to catch the "gangs" circulating fake currency operating in these areas and save the poor people who fall victims to their machinations.
