CISF for decongesting Delhi airport

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) wants one of the three low-cost airlines — Spicejet, GoAir and IndiGo — to shift from Terminal 1(T1) to Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi for better passenger movement.
The CISF is responsible for the airport’s security.
According to airport sources, it takes more time to board a flight at Terminal 1 in comparison to Terminal 3 as the infrastructure is limited there.
A portion of the terminal has been closed by airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited as part of its plan to start international operations there.
Passengers also complain about delay in security checks and getting boarding passes at T1D.
“We have asked Delhi International Airport Limited to shift one of the airlines to T3 as they have enough space there. It will be of great help for passengers, who can move smoothly from the gate to boarding. In peak hours, long queues often form at the counters and to avoid that we have requested to shift an airline,” said a senior CISF official.
The Delhi airport handles over one lakh passengers.
On an average, around 40-45 thousand passengers use T1 every day.
“The domestic terminal, meant to cater low-cost carriers, used to handle 35,000 passengers. But after the closure of Kingfisher, the passenger volume increased. The infrastructure is same and so waiting time for passengers is more at T1 in comparison to T3,” the official added.
Terminal 3, on the other hand, caters to over 17,000 international passengers and around 18,500 domestic passengers every day.
Over 32,000 passengers arrive at T3 every day.
At T1, in comparison, 22,000 passengers depart daily with almost the same number of passengers arriving.
The increase in passenger movement always leads to chaos as various agencies working at airport have limited resources.
“We have to increase the number of personnel with the increase in passenger movement,” CISF officer said.
