A Delhi court has ordered extradition of a Croatian national — who was wanted for running drug business in his native country. Dusan Kovacevic was arrested last November following a Red Corner Notice (RCN).
He was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by a court at Rijeka in Croatia in January 2005 for trading in contraband heroin. The Croatian Supreme Court later in July 2006 had enhanced his jail term to three years and two months.
At the time when the Croatian Supreme Court enhanced his sentence he was out on bail and fled the country quietly before the local police could arrest him. The ministry of external affair counsel Naveen Matta told the court to inquire into the extradition request of Croatia.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) Amit Bansal said, “The prescribed procedure has been followed in as much as the extradition request has been submitted through diplomatic channel, along with documents and required information in terms of the 1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, to which both India and Croatia are parties.”
Dusan did not contest his extradition proceedings and told the court that he has no objection to being extradited to Croatia.
