Pressing the need for making disciplined and awakened citizens out of children to tackle problems like terrorism, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday said the government is planning to make NSS and NCC training compulsory in schools in the national capital.
Addressing the Republic Day celebrations organised by Delhi government, she termed the Mumbai terror strikes as an "attack on India's sovereignty" and said the awakening of the people is key to combating the enemies of the country.
"Children should be made better, disciplined, sensitive, awakened citizens. Lack of discipline sometimes lead to unwarranted incidents... We will make NSS, boy scout and girl guide training compulsory in schools, including public, private and aided educational institutions," she said.
The Chief Minister also said the government is taking all steps to make Delhi a clean, green, safe and beautiful city.
"Delhi will be hosting the Commonwealth Games in a year from now. We will have to stage it in such a way so that the world acknowledges that India is now among the leading countries," she said.
Dikshit earlier hoisted the national flag, inspected the parade and took the salute of marching contingents of Delhi Police, Home Guards and Civil Defence, Fire Service, NCC cadets and students of various city schools.
