Asking the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) to treat the fire tragedy in a Kolkata hospital as a wake-up call, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has directed the chief fire officer to start the inspection of all hospitals, cinema halls and other major buildings.

A detailed inspection plan is being chalked out. “The CM has instructed the chief fire officer to carry out the inspection of all hospitals and other major buildings at the earliest to ensure the fire safety norms are being followed,” said a Delhi government official.

Dikshit has directed the chief fire officer to ensure that no building remains un-inspected. “It is essential to overcome an incident, causing loss of lives and property,” she said.

The official said the chief fire officer has also been asked to keep all fire-fighting equipment oiled and provide the latest training to fire-fighting staff.

The Delhi government will provide extra funds to ensure that all fire stations are well-equipped to meet an eventuality. Dikshit has directed the fire department to submit an interim report so that precautionary steps could be taken up.
