The deadly cold and snowfall in Himachal Pradesh this winter have warmed the hearts of apple growers in the state.

“Apple trees will get the chilling requirement, essential for the quality of the fruit,” said Shimla apple grower Narinder Begta.

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh remained in the grip of the cold wave on Monday, with Keylong, headquarters of tribal district Lahaul and Spiti, shivering at the season’s lowest temperature of minus 17 degree Celsius.

Shimla recorded a low of 3.7 degree Celsius.

The Kashmir valley is reeling because of the severe cold caused by the snowfall since last Thursday.

“Dry and cold weather with clear night skies is expected over the next 24 hours. This indicates the temperatures can dip further,” said a weather official in Srinagar. Srinagar recorded minus 5.2 degree Celsius on Sunday night. In Leh, the temperature went down to minus 23 degree Celsius.

In Uttarkhand due to the northerlies, the maximum temperature stayed below normal. The upper reaches of the state received snowfall last week and as the western disturbance passed, the entire state turned snug in the cold conditions. In Dehradun the early morning was foggy while the sky was clear in the day.
