The UPA government is keen to introduce a single window scheme for admission to post-graduate medical courses to end the row on seat sharing between the Centre and states.
The system, modelled on the lines of common engineering entrance test, would declare a candidate’s position in all India quota and state quota.
This would enable a student to know the specialty he or she is entitled to and opt for just one counseling session, either for central or state quota.
Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium on Thursday sought the Supreme Court’s permission to move an application for appropriate orders on the matter.
A bench, headed by Justice R.V. Raveendran, agreed to the request and directed the states to inform the Centre about the results of their first round of counseling by May 27.
As the Centre’s second counseling session ended on Thursday, the bench said the vacant seats in the Central quota would not lapse until its extended second round of counseling ends on June 12.
