The trendsetter: DPS RK Puram
Founded as a Public School in 1972 in New Delhi, DPS is a private institution run by the Delhi Public School Society. It is one of the most sought after schools in Delhi. The school upholds the founders’ commitment to excellence in all fields, with emphasis on its motto ‘Service Before Self’. DPS RK Puram has students enrolled from standard 6 to 12, while junior school students go to either the East of Kailash branch or Vasant Vihar branch. What makes parents choose DPS over other schools? Speaking for her parents, Kriti Malhotra, a 2006 pass out says, “That time few good schools were there, which included DPS, Convent of Jesus and Mary and Carmel Convent. My mother however, wanted me to go to a co-educational school, considering CJM and Carmel Convent were all girls’ schools. Also, Shyama Chona had become the principal that time and my parents had heard good things about her, so DPS was chosen. Moreover, DPS always maintained a standard of education with scholar badges etc.” The trend-setting Robotics lab at the school was one of the first in the country.
Stimulating Intellectual Growth : Mt St Mary’s
The school was established in 1963 by the Brothers of St Patrick (Patrician Brothers) on the invitation of the Army. Initially meant for only defence personnel, even now, 70% of its students belong to the defence category. Principal Rev. Bro. Dominic Jacob says, “Mt St Mary’s stresses not only on academics, but also in making good human beings out of our children.” From its humble beginnings of four brothers, six teachers and 85 students, the school now has more than 1,800 students and 72 teachers. At MSM, the modern infrastructure blends with the beautiful environs to provide a spectrum of learning activities that focus on integrated development.

Old(est)and going strong: Modern School
One of the oldest schools in the region, Modern School is known for its strong academic background and its hold in the extracurricular activities region. Modern School has dished out some of the best students, of the country. What makes MSVV special? Malavika Sharma, batch of 2005, said, “No matter how little or how grown up you were, the teachers didn’t think twice about wrapping you up in a big bear hug if you did well in your exams, if you flunked your exams, if you lost your pencil or hurt your finger, or if your boyfriend dumped you”. Gayatri Sahai, currently studying in standard 9 said, “I’ve been in this school since kindergarten and have loved every bit of it. I love my teachers. Although I’m not very happy about the CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) being brought in. We have a lot more work to do, too many projects. I think the Boards were better.”
The school has two newsletters — Blue Print — printed thrice a year, which is a report of the latest activities and events at school, and Vasant Parag — the annual school magazine. Apart from the print medium, the school also has an online group of editors who manage the affairs of the school website. New-age Teaching : DPS Vasant Kunj
Established in 1994, DPS Vasant Kunj is the other sought after DPS in this zone. With almost 4,000 students, the school offers new-age teaching facilities, including Math and fashion technology laboratories and has tie ups with institutions abroad. The three libraries are have the latest publications and books catering to every academic need of the child. The DPS Shiksha Kendra is a unique part of the school, involving all the students, to sensitise them to others’ needs. What made school special? Sugandha Malhotra, an alumna of 2005 says, “The teachers! They were the kind, who earned your respect and shared a friendly relationship with students where you didn’t fear consulting them for matters besides the NCERT.”
The school website has an e-version of the school magazine and a students’ blog section as well. DPS has various interesting clubs, such as the environment club, to make the students aware of the need to preserve the environment and the Code Warrior Club, which is essentially the computer club, where students develop technology among other things. The Shiksha Kendra, which began functioning in July 2003, houses more than 100 underprivileged children.
Taking the Lead: Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute
Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute, situated at Subroto Park, Delhi Cantonment is one of the leading public schools run by Indian Air Force Educational and Cultural Society. When it started in the year 1985, it was meant only for differently-abled children.
However, it was felt that an integrated institution was a better option, and thus, the school has been imparting integrated education, since the year 1986. The school has a primary wing, a senior wing and a special wing, where integrated education is provided to the children with special needs, so as to bring them with the general school. Principal Shipra Sarkar says, “Our school is the first integrated school in Asia, with both differently-able students and regular students studying in the same environment.”
This school caters to mainly Air Force personnel, with 70% of its students coming from air force background. Apart from the students who have brought laurels in academic and extracurricular fields, the teachers too, take part in a number of workshops, attending regular in-service training programme organised by various educational bodies like CBSE, NCERT, IAF, etc.
Buzzing with Activity: Tagore International School
Tagore International School was established in 1972, and is spread over 2.5 acres of land. The school stresses on all-round development of the students, allowing freedom of thought and expression. Great emphasis is laid on cultural exposure, which is encompassed by regular performances by renowned artists from the various corners of the world. The reasonable fee structure over the years has ensured a wide spread social representation in the parental clientele. What is it that makes the school different from the others? “Our school radiates positive energy, and this is a comment made by everybody who visits us. The school is always buzzing with activity”, says Principal Madhulika Sen.
Social responsibility has been a priority for TIS, with children from orphanages, NGOs, and the differently abled, getting free mainstream education. Academics will keep happening, but it is the values that matter the most and we lay strong emphasis on discipline, morals and ethics. Moreover, I am extremely proud of my teachers, for I believe I have the best of lot”, added Sen.
A Proud Legacy: Ryan International
Established in 1991, the school holds an excellent academic and co-curricular record, with its students having created a niche for themselves in technical and educational institutions in India and abroad. Principal Anju Uppal said, “Our children have been participating in the Mock United Nations regularly, where Ryan International has secured the seat of the Secretary General for 4-5 years.” The school installed a recycling plant two years ago, to make the children aware of the importance of protecting the environment.
"With the help of the recycling plant, all the newspapers that come to the school are recycled and children also involve themselves in making paper bags etc”, added Uppal.
The school won the award of the Most Prestigious School for the year 2009. Instead of gifting bouquets to guest visiting the school, potted plants are presented, which is not the usual norm. To inculcate leadership qualities in its students, Ryan International participates in a programme called the Presidential Classroom, where students from all over the world come together to debate on key international issues.
Inculcating Right Values: GD Goenka Public School
The school was established in 1994 by businessman Anjani Kumar Goenka and was one of the first schools to have air-conditioned classrooms and buses. Spread over 3 acres, the school has a huge library which has over 30,000 books.
The school also believes children should be taught the right values and, therefore, tries to involve them in as many social and environmental causes as possible. Another innovative activity the school organises every month is a session with the students and their grandparents to help them bond better. With eight schools already under the GD Goenka Schools’ umbrella, and 11 more opening soon, this school is a rapidly expanding family.
