Congress president Sonia Gandhi was out of intensive care unit (ICU) of an overseas hospital on Saturday after undergoing successful surgery for an undisclosed ailment.

A bulletin released by the party's media department chairman Janardan Dwivedi said: "Smt Sonia Gandhi remained in the ICU for 24 hours and has thereafter been moved out".

Party general secretary and Sonia's son Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her husband Robert Vadra are with Sonia.

"Her family has expressed gratitude on her behalf for all the messages and good wishes that have been sent to her," Dwivedi said.

The Congress president is expected to return to India in the next two to three weeks. Special prayers were held across the country, including Sonia's constituency Rae Bareli. Amitabh Bachchan also wished her. "We wish Soniaji recovers as soon as possible. Our prayers wishes are with her," he said.
