The Congress will wait for the situation to normalise in Andhra Pradesh before coming out with a mechanism for holding consultations on the Telangana issue.

This was decided at the meeting on Friday of the high-powered Congress core group, which includes Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The leaders took stock of the situation in the state where the proponents of separate Telangana and unified Andhra have been at the loggerheads for almost a month now.

Friday’s was the first meeting of the core group after Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s consultations with eight parties from Andhra Pradesh on January 5.
