The Congress on Tuesday downplayed the BJP crisis emanating from controversies surrounding its chief, Nitin Gadkari.
“The BJP has always spoken with a double tongue because they have dual memberships. Unless they become members of RSS, they cannot be members of BJP. That is the normal practice there,” party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary quipped.
The party, however, refrained from seeking Gadkari’s resignation. This was in complete contrast with many voices from within the BJP, which were seeking his removal from the post of party chief. “It is BJP’s internal matter, which the party itself will decide on,” she said. “When the charges are proved, the law will apply to all and sundry. At this moment, the BJP is seized of the matter.”
However, in private, Congress leaders maintained that this was part of an ongoing power game in the BJP. “It is basically Gadkari versus Narendra Modi… that battle has evolved into this,” a leader said.
Another Congress leader said that the BJP was sharply divided on the Gadkari issue. “One section favours his continuance apparently to please the RSS but another wants an immediate change of guard to ensure Modi’s final crowning,” he said.
