Two councillors will on Thursday urge the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to lower the booking rate of the Ambedkar Stadium and lease it to the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA).
The booking rate of the football stadium was raised from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 last year.
Congress councillors Jai Kishan Sharma and Khabinder Singh said they would tell the MCD's standing committee the 10-fold hike was denying young sportspersons the chance to use the facility.
The duo will also push for the stadium to be leased out to DSA just as the Feroz Shah Kotla cricket stadium has been leased to the Delhi and District Cricket Association.
"The Delhi Soccer Association had made several representations to us asking for a reduction in the rate fixed by the MCD," Sharma said. "They are finding it quite difficult to run their regular activities due to the steep hike."
DSA vice-president NK Bhatia said the association had raised the matter in earlier meetings of the MCD too, but to no avail.
"We have been demanding this for the past (few) months. But nothing has been done so far. We are hassled. I have also discussed the issue with the mayor of Delhi. We are not being able to start our annual activities due to this," Bhatia said.
He said several international football tournaments have been held on the ground. "It should be given to us on lease. When FIFA representatives come here, they express surprise that the football association in the national capital does not have a ground of its own."
Over the years, players have been getting a raw deal with the stadium being used for purposes other than football, with the approval of the authorities.
Political rallies, cultural programmes and even celebrity nights have been held at the stadium.
