Congress on Friday hit out at Anna Hazare and his team accusing them of turning dharnas into a "joke" as their indefinite fast against corruption entered its third day with yoga guru Ramdev today joining them.
"In a democracy people have a right to sit on dharna or hold agitation. Team Anna has reduced this right of the people into a joke. Baba Ramadev and Team Anna have played with this right of the common man," party spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters in New Delhi.
"It seems he (Anna) and his team want to put pressure on the government. Nobody has the right to build unnecessary pressure on the government. People of the country have now understood their motives."
The party's reaction came as Team Anna's indefinite fast on the third day of the agitation has so far failed to evoke popular support.
Ramdev, who along with 2,000 supporters marched from Ramlila Maidan to Jantar Mantar, the venue of Team Anna's fast, joined Anna Hazare and his fasting colleagues -- Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia.
Hazare and his team should contest elections: Digvijaya
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh today welcomed Anna Hazare's indication of floating a new party to fight the 2014 general elections and said the activist and his team should also contest the polls.
"It is a very welcome statement. I welcome it. Anna Hazare should contest. Ramdev, Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan, Kiran Bedi, everyone should contest election," Singh told reporters while reacting to Hazare's statements.
In a television interview, Hazare yesterday gave an indication in this regard and did not rule the emergence of a "people's party" in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, saying it is not wrong if candidates selected by the people to fight the poll choose to do so.
"I will travel across the country, tell people to come up with candidates and pick the best out of them. I will then campaign for the candidates.
"We will tell the people who is the best candidate for them after putting the names on the net. We’ll ask them if they want to fight as independents or as one party. Let them decide. There's nothing wrong with a new party being formed," he had said.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javdekar also said that in a democracy everyone has a right to form a political party.
"We are ourselves fighting corruption," he said.
Asked whether RSS was not supporting Hazare's agitation this time and could this be a reason for poor gathering in Team Anna's agitation, Javdekar said, "We have already cleared our position".
Team Anna's fast, which entered the third day today, has been witnessing very low-turnout. However, after Ramdev's appearance, about 3,000 people collected at the venue.
