A Delhi police constable has been arrested for allegedly roughing up a South Delhi Municipal Corporation employee on Thursday.
Rajendra Kumar, who is posted with the police’s third battalion, is said to have beaten up Prakash Kumar, a domestic breeding checker on a mosquito-control drive, in south Delhi’s Dakshinpuri.
Prakash was near the constable’s home to check whether mosquitoes were breeding there at the time of the incident. “Prakash told us that the constable shouted abuses at him while he went about doing his duty in an adjoining lane. The SDMC employee objected to Rajendra’s behaviour,” a senior police officer said.
"This led to an argument between the two. Prakash alleged that Rajendra dragged him into his home and thrashed him," the officer added.
Prakash, the officer said, was rescued by area residents who called in the police. They brought both the men to the Ambedkar Nagar police station.
The SDMC employee’s family members alleged the police had tried to hush up the incident — and not register a case against Rajendra — because it involved a policeman.
The FIR was registered after several SDMC employees protested outside the police station.
Charges of "obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions" and "assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty" under the Indian Penal Code have been slapped on Rajendra.
Comments from the constable or his family members were not available.
