The Capital showed its disrespect for the average khaki-clad police officer yet again on Monday night when three men, including a lawyer’s son, allegedly assaulted a 24-year-old Delhi Police constable for being asked not to drink at south Delhi’s Saket Court complex, police said.
The victim — the first to be beaten black and blue for doing his job this year — has been identified as Subhash Chandra.
The constable had just two hours to go till the end of his eight-hour sentry duty at a booth near gate number three of the court complex when the incident happened. “Sometime between 9.45 and 10pm, a Maruti Alto car drove into the court premises from gate number 3. The vehicle stopped in the parking area, the driver unlocked the gate on his side but didn’t step out,” said a senior police officer.
Chandra, who was inducted into the force in 2008 and had shuttled between most of the 25 sentry locations in and around the court premises, kept a close watch on the car for about four minutes.
He decided to walk up to its three occupants as soon as he caught a glimpse of a plastic glass in the driver’s hand.
“When he realised the trio was drinking, he told the driver that his vehicle was parked in ‘secure premises’ and that they should drive away at his first warning,” the officer said.
The constable’s warning was met by a string of abuses hurled at him by the driver, as his other two friends allegedly pounced on him, pushed him into his own booth and started beating him up. Chandra caught hold of the driver just as some of the court’s security staff arrived.
“Seeing the tables turned, the other two fled the scene and the main accused was arrested from the spot. He was later identified as the son of a practising lawyer at the Patiala House Courts in central Delhi,” said the officer, adding that the hunt for the other two was on.
Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south) confirmed the arrest but refused to comment further.
While this is the first such incident of a police officer being assaulted for doing his job this year, a police constable was beaten-up for attempting to stop three drunken men from partaking in a semi-nude celebration atop their car in central Delhi on New Year Eve.
On December 20, a constable was attacked with a hammer and a bystander gunned down by an irate driver after the latter was caught drinking at Sarojini Nagar market.
