A 28-year-old Delhi Police constable was shot dead in his single room accommodation in west Delhi's Baprolla village, allegedly by two property dealers, at 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Five bullets were pumped into Tanvir, who was sleeping in his room.

According to the police, the murderers held a grudge against Tanvir, as he had arrested one of the two - Ravinder Sharma - on charges of disturbing peace in the area.

"Around a month ago, Tanvir had prevented Ravinder - whom he had arrested then - from illegally grabbing a plot owned by one Dharambir Choudhary. This had enraged the property dealer and he and his accomplice Pradeep Sharma, had allegedly murdered Tanvir to take revenge," police claimed.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Choudhary's son said they had given the single room accommodation to Tanvir, as the latter wanted it to prepare for the intra-departmental evaluation test.

"He wanted to become a sub-inspector with the Delhi Police," said Choudhary's son.

The police have arrested Pradeep while Ravinder - the main accused whom Tanvir had arrested under section 107/151 of CrPC about a month ago - is absconding.

They have also recovered a country-made pistol from Pradeep's possession that he used to shoot Tanvir.

V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west) said the matter came to their notice through a PCR call made by a local resident.

"We reached the plot owned by Choudhary and found Tanvir dead,"Renganathan said, adding, "Tanvir had returned to his room after finishing his duty at around 10.30pm."

According to Renganathan, 10 police teams were formed to investigate the case. "We learnt during investigation that on August 22 the two accused had tried to prevent one Shyambir from constructing a boundary wall on his plot claiming that it belonged to them. Tanvir reached the spot and arrested Ravinder for disturbing peace," he said.
