Rickshaw pullers can be very dangerous.

On Saturday, Traffic Constable Dinesh Kumar, 38, was stabbed to death with an ice-pick that he had used to deflate a rickshaw’s tyres on the Wazirabad-Bhajanpura intersection in northeast Delhi, police said.

Kumar was attacked after he reprimanded a rickshaw puller for obstructing traffic near the Gokul Puri Police Station.

“He was stabbed thrice, twice on his neck and then his head, but he gave the rickshaw puller a chase with the ice pick still hanging from his neck,” said Ramesh Kumar (36), a cigarette vendor who saw the episode.

Kumar’s family, however, claims that no one helped him and he bled to death.

“People were enjoying the scene,” said a tearful Tarun Kumar (30), Dinesh’s cousin.

“He chased the attacker alone. The road was crowded but no one helped him,” said Mahipal Singh (70), Dinesh’s father who retired from the Indian Army in 1990.

But police denied the claims.

“Another traffic policeman and some people gave the rickshaw puller a chase, but he scaled the road divider and fled,” said S S Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (northeast).

Kumar had been posted in the area for the past four years. “He was deflating tyres of erring rickshaws who were blocking the Wazirabad road, when the rickshaw puller attacked him,” said a senior police officer.

Police said the accused has been identified and will be arrested soon.
